Prayer of Lament 

The sea roars with the grief
of all the plastic that fills it
of the destruction of coral reef.
The fields exclaim despair
for delayed rains and prolonged drought for species extinction on a daily basis. No song of joy rings out from the trees of the forest decimated by forest fires. How long O God, Amen

Reflection

Katalina Tahaafe-Williams, a theologian writing from Australia and the Pacific Islands: 
‘Only the willingly ignorant continue to deny the link between our consumerist lifestyles, climate change, and suffering in the developing world. Promoting economic growth as the answer to all our problems, and in particular global poverty, is irresponsible. We need to recognise that our current growth-oriented system is driven by powerful economic interests set on making profits, however short term. And it is just plain wrong to ignore the suffering of the poorest and most vulnerable populations in the world especially when they are the least contributors to climate change.’  

What can we do? Think of five actions you can make to stop climate change destroying the earth, our habitat.

Drought drives people to the brink. Storms tear families apart. Raging waters show no mercy. Our world is in crisis. We have the power to stop it. People living in poverty are on the frontline of the climate chaos. They are losing food, water, homes and family. Every day, they walk further, dig deeper and build stronger to survive. Unrelenting. Determined. They battle the worst of a climate crisis they did not create. This is unjust. But a better way is possible. A way that restores justice to our broken world today. A way that protects the future for all of us, our children and grandchildren.

Katalina Tahaafe-Williams, une théologienne écrivant depuis l’Australie et les îles du Pacifique :
« Seuls les ignorants volontaires continuent de nier le lien entre nos modes de vie consuméristes, le changement climatique et la souffrance dans le monde en développement. Promouvoir la croissance économique comme la réponse à tous nos problèmes, et en particulier à la pauvreté mondiale, est irresponsable. Nous devons reconnaître que notre système actuel, axé sur la croissance, est porté par de puissants intérêts économiques qui cherchent à faire des profits, même à court terme. Et il est tout simplement inacceptable d’ignorer la souffrance des populations les plus pauvres et les plus vulnérables du monde, en particulier lorsqu’elles sont celles qui contribuent le moins au changement climatique. »
Que pouvons-nous faire ? Pensez à cinq actions que vous pouvez entreprendre pour empêcher le changement climatique de détruire la Terre, notre habitat.

La sécheresse pousse les gens au bord du gouffre. Les tempêtes déchirent les familles. Les eaux déchaînées sont sans pitié. Notre monde est en crise. Nous avons le pouvoir d’y mettre un terme. Les personnes vivant dans la pauvreté sont en première ligne du chaos climatique. Elles perdent de la nourriture, de l’eau, des maisons et des familles. Chaque jour, elles marchent plus loin, creusent plus profondément et construisent plus fort pour survivre. Implacables. Déterminées. Elles luttent contre le pire d’une crise climatique qu’elles n’ont pas créée. C’est injuste. Mais une meilleure solution est possible. Une solution qui rétablit la justice dans notre monde brisé d’aujourd’hui. Une solution qui protège l’avenir de nous tous, de nos enfants et de nos petits-enfants.

«فقط نادانان با کمال میل به انکار ارتباط بین سبک زندگی مصرف‌گرایانه ما، تغییرات آب و هوایی و رنج در جهان در حال توسعه ادامه می‌دهند. ترویج رشد اقتصادی به عنوان پاسخی برای همه مشکلات ما، به ویژه فقر جهانی، غیر مسئولانه است. ما باید بدانیم که سیستم رشد محور کنونی ما توسط منافع اقتصادی قدرتمندی که بر روی کسب سود، هر چند کوتاه مدت، هدایت می شود، هدایت می شود. و نادیده گرفتن رنج فقیرترین و آسیب پذیرترین جمعیت جهان به خصوص زمانی که آنها کمترین سهم را در تغییرات آب و هوایی دارند، کاملاً اشتباه است.

خشکسالی مردم را به لبه پرتگاه می کشاند. طوفان خانواده ها را از هم می پاشد. آبهای خروشان هیچ رحمتی ندارند. دنیای ما در بحران است. ما این قدرت را داریم که جلوی آن را بگیریم. مردمی که در فقر زندگی می کنند در خط مقدم هرج و مرج آب و هوایی قرار دارند. آنها غذا، آب، خانه و خانواده را از دست می دهند. هر روز بیشتر قدم می‌زنند، عمیق‌تر می‌روند و قوی‌تر می‌سازند تا زنده بمانند. بی امان تعیین شده است. آنها با بدترین بحران آب و هوایی که ایجاد نکرده اند مبارزه می کنند. این ناعادلانه است. اما راه بهتری ممکن است. راهی که عدالت را به دنیای شکسته امروز ما باز می گرداند. راهی که از آینده همه ما، فرزندان و نوه هایمان محافظت می کند.
