Reflection on Mark 9v38-50
The discussion earlier in the chapter about status introduces the theme of discipleship behaviour. It is an upsidedown servant kingdom. The least are the greatest. And all are welcome. Jesus is not partial.
A stranger has performed an exorcism and the disciples told him to stop because he wasn’t one of them! (This has echoes of a similar story of Moses). Jesus says no one who doesn’t say anything bad against me should be stopped! The struggle against the powers of darkness is real and we need to work together. Anyone doing good in the name of Christ will be blessed. Love of God erupts into practical love of your neighbour. Gods messengers will be shown kindness and they must reciprocate.
Undermining the faith of anyone is the most serious of sins, particularly a new believer or a child or anyone who is vulnerable. The rejection of them may well undermine their faith, so beware. Protect the vulnerable.
Anyone who sets a trap for someone, to trip them up is warned. If we don’t welcome strangers, foreigners, asylum seekers and instead ostracise them, undermining their faith so that they no longer believe, it would be better if a millstone is tied around our neck and we were cast into the sea. Not the stone from a small hand-mill worked by a human being, but a large, heavy one turned by donkey power.
Sin/wrong thinking leads to words and actions which have consequences. Its better you are maimed than continue to be destructive to the vulnerable. Wow! Or you may end up in hell/Gehenna.
Gehenna was the ever-burning rubbish tip outside Jerusalem and is used as an image of the horror of being cut off from God. If we fail to deal with our indwelling destructive actions we may end up in Gods burning rubbish tip.
So deal with it. Pluck it out- cast it out. Throw out the eye rather than be thrown into hell. It would be better for you to gouge out your offending eye and enter heaven as a one-eyed person, than to be forever sentenced to hell (Isa.66:24). This is true now as well as at the end of our lives. The disciples are those being warned. Later Peter and Judas will betray Jesus openly.
(Lev.2:13) A Jewish sacrifice is accompanied by salt. The sacrifice uses fire. We all need to purify ourselves and our lives. This is part of our ongoing process as Christians. It’s a discipline.
A salty Christian is one who is at peace. Salt savours, preserves, purifies. Cultivate wisdom, purity, graciousness, so take care to maintain in yourselves the saltness of the salt. Salt is symbolic of Gods covenant and real fellowship. Be at peace with one another. Share the salt.

對馬可福音 9v38-50 的反思 本章前面關於地位的討論引入了門徒訓練的主題。這是一個顛倒的僕人王國。最小的也是最大的。歡迎大家。耶穌並不偏心。 一個陌生人進行了驅魔，門徒們叫他停止，因為他不是他們中的一員！ （這與摩西的類似故事相呼應）。耶穌說，任何不說我壞話的人都不應該被阻止！與黑暗勢力的鬥爭是真實的，我們需要共同努力。任何奉基督之名行善的人都會受到祝福。對神的愛會爆發為對鄰舍的實際愛。上帝的使者會受到仁慈的對待，他們必須回報。
破壞任何人的信仰都是最嚴重的罪過，尤其是新信徒、兒童或任何脆弱的人。拒絕他們很可能會削弱他們的信仰，所以要小心。保護弱勢。 任何為他人設下陷阱、絆倒他人的人都會被警告。如果我們不歡迎陌生人、外國人、尋求庇護者，而是排斥他們，破壞他們的信仰，使他們不再相信，那還不如把磨石套在我們的脖子上，把我們扔進海裡。石頭不是人類手工製作的小型手磨機上的石頭，而是用驢子力量轉動的又大又重的石頭。 罪惡/錯誤的思維會導致言行產生後果。被模仿總比繼續傷害弱勢好。哇！或者你可能最終會下地獄/Gehenna。

Reflectie op Marcus 9v38-50 De discussie eerder in het hoofdstuk over status introduceert het thema van discipelschapsgedrag. Het is een omgekeerd dienend koninkrijk. De minste zijn de grootste. En iedereen is welkom. Jezus is niet partijdig. Een vreemdeling heeft een exorcisme uitgevoerd en de discipelen zeiden hem dat hij moest stoppen omdat hij niet een van hen was! (Dit doet denken aan een soortgelijk verhaal van Mozes). Jezus zegt dat niemand die niets slechts over mij zegt, gestopt mag worden! De strijd tegen de machten van de duisternis is echt en we moeten samenwerken. Iedereen die goed doet in de naam van Christus zal gezegend worden. Liefde voor God barst uit in praktische liefde voor je naaste. Gods boodschappers zullen vriendelijkheid worden betoond en ze moeten wederkerig zijn.
Het ondermijnen van het geloof van iemand is de ernstigste zonde, met name een nieuwe gelovige of een kind of iemand die kwetsbaar is. De afwijzing ervan kan hun geloof wel eens ondermijnen, dus wees op je hoede. Bescherm de kwetsbaren. Iedereen die een val zet voor iemand, om ze te laten struikelen, is gewaarschuwd. Als we vreemdelingen, buitenlanders, asielzoekers niet verwelkomen en ze in plaats daarvan buitensluiten, hun geloof ondermijnen zodat ze niet langer geloven, zou het beter zijn als er een molensteen om onze nek wordt geknoopt en we in de zee worden gegooid. Niet de steen van een kleine handmolen die door een mens wordt bediend, maar een grote, zware die door ezelkracht wordt aangestuurd. Zonde/verkeerd denken leidt tot woorden en daden die gevolgen hebben. Het is beter dat je wordt nagebootst dan dat je de kwetsbaren blijft vernietigen. Wauw! Of je belandt misschien in de hel/Gehenna.
Gehenna was de eeuwig brandende vuilnisbelt buiten Jeruzalem en wordt gebruikt als een beeld van de verschrikking van het afgesneden zijn van God. Als we niet omgaan met onze inwonende destructieve daden, belanden we misschien in Gods brandende vuilnisbelt. Dus pak het aan. Pluk het eruit - werp het eruit. Gooi liever het oog uit dan in de hel te worden gegooid. Het zou beter voor u zijn om uw beledigende oog uit te steken en de hemel binnen te gaan als een eenogige persoon, dan om voor altijd veroordeeld te worden tot de hel (Jes. 66:24). Dit is nu waar, net als aan het einde van ons leven. De discipelen zijn degenen die gewaarschuwd worden. Later zullen Petrus en Judas Jezus openlijk verraden.
(Lev. 2:13) Een Joods offer gaat gepaard met zout. Het offer gebruikt vuur. We moeten onszelf en ons leven allemaal zuiveren. Dit is onderdeel van ons voortdurende proces als christenen. Het is een discipline. Een zoute christen is iemand die in vrede is. Zout smaakt, conserveert, zuivert. Kweek wijsheid, zuiverheid, vriendelijkheid, dus zorg ervoor dat u de zoutheid van het zout in uzelf behoudt. Zout is een symbool van Gods verbond en echte gemeenschap. Wees in vrede met elkaar. Deel het zout.

We bidden voor mensen en situaties waar we ons zorgen over maken, inclusief ons land, onze vrienden en families en degenen die gemarginaliseerd zijn in onze gemeenschappen, de armen, de vluchtelingen en daklozen. Mogen we u niet teleurstellen. Amen
