Reading John 12v20-33
Reflection
The passage is a long rambling theological treatise which will not have meant much to the Greeks who want to meet Jesus and came from a different religion, a different culture. Israel was multicultural, Romans, Greeks, Samaritans, Syrophoenicians, Jews, Africans.
Jesus does not address the question that Philip and Andrew put to him. There are Greeks who want to meet him. There are North Koreans who want to meet Jesus! It’s that stark. Of course 2000 years later we understand that the message of Jesus is for everyone, not just for me and my Jewish friends, not just for me and my English white friends, not just for African Caribbeans, not just for the Church, but for Indians, Pakistanis, Iraqis, Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims, Russians. The message of Jesus is for everyone. Philip was Greek and we find his story continuing in Acts where he shares his faith with an Ethiopian.
Jesus reminds them that he is going to die and in his death draw everyone together, as we in the church should be together. This is cross bearing discipleship. Jesus is human and he doesn’t want to suffer. He wants this cup of suffering taken from him. As at Jesus baptism, a voice is heard from heaven. We have a choice we can choose evil or we can choose light and the good life. The crowd of Jews knows that the Messiah will be immortal so they start questioning Jesus instead of accepting what he is saying. He warns them that the time is short to choose. For all of us the time is short but we will waste time arguing, semantics. Jesus at this point withdraws. It is enough. And he reemerges on the donkey procession into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.
The way to be a Christian is through humility and repentance, to accept that in ways we cannot always understand that Jesus, a very good man, Gods Son, was brutally murdered and goes before us to open up the pathway to God. This is the gospel. We come to the end of ourselves and we hang there with Jesus, and die, to be reborn by Gods Spirit.
People can huddle together, cossetting their Christian faith in empty, crumbling buildings. This is not the Gospel. Jesus came to show us another way. It is for everyone, for asylum seekers, for prisoners, for drug users, for muslims, Palestinians…. For all of us. Start following this man and put your life in order. This is the message we need to share.

Betrachtung
Bei der Passage handelt es sich um eine lange, weitschweifige theologische Abhandlung, die den Griechen, die Jesus treffen wollten und einer anderen Religion, einer anderen Kultur entstammten, wahrscheinlich nicht viel bedeutet hat. Israel war multikulturell, Römer, Griechen, Samariter, Syrophönizier, Juden, Afrikaner.
Jesus geht nicht auf die Frage ein, die Philippus und Andreas ihm stellten. Es gibt Griechen, die ihn treffen wollen. Es gibt Nordkoreaner, die Jesus treffen wollen! Es ist so krass. Natürlich verstehen wir 2000 Jahre später, dass die Botschaft Jesu für alle gilt, nicht nur für mich und meine jüdischen Freunde, nicht nur für mich und meine englischen weißen Freunde, nicht nur für die Menschen in der afrikanischen Karibik, nicht nur für die Kirche, sondern für die Inder , Pakistaner, Iraker, Hindus, Sikhs, Muslime, Russen. Die Botschaft Jesu gilt allen. Philippus war Grieche und wir finden seine Geschichte in der Apostelgeschichte weiter, wo er einem Äthiopier seinen Glauben erzählt.
Jesus erinnert sie daran, dass er sterben wird, und bringt in seinem Tod alle zusammen, so wie wir in der Kirche zusammen sein sollten. Das ist kreuztragende Jüngerschaft. Jesus ist ein Mensch und er möchte nicht leiden. Er möchte, dass ihm dieser Kelch des Leidens genommen wird. Wie bei der Taufe Jesu ertönt eine Stimme vom Himmel. Wir haben die Wahl, ob wir das Böse oder das Licht und das gute Leben wählen können. Die Menge der Juden weiß, dass der Messias unsterblich sein wird, also beginnt sie, Jesus in Frage zu stellen, anstatt zu akzeptieren, was er sagt. Er warnt sie, dass die Zeit knapp wird, sich zu entscheiden. Für uns alle ist die Zeit knapp, aber wir werden Zeit mit Streiten und Semantik verschwenden. An diesem Punkt zieht sich Jesus zurück. Es reicht. Und er taucht am Palmsonntag bei der Eselprozession nach Jerusalem wieder auf.
Der Weg, ein Christ zu sein, führt über Demut und Reue. Wir müssen akzeptieren, dass wir nicht immer verstehen können, dass Jesus, ein sehr guter Mann, Gottes Sohn, brutal ermordet wurde und vor uns hergeht, um den Weg zu Gott zu öffnen. Das ist das Evangelium. Wir kommen ans Ende unserer selbst und bleiben dort mit Jesus und sterben, um durch den Geist Gottes wiedergeboren zu werden.
In leeren, verfallenden Gebäuden können sich Menschen zusammendrängen und ihren christlichen Glauben pflegen. Das ist nicht das Evangelium. Jesus kam, um uns einen anderen Weg zu zeigen. Es gilt für alle, für Asylsuchende, für Gefangene, für Drogenkonsumenten, für Muslime, Palästinenser…. Für uns alle. Fangen Sie an, diesem Mann zu folgen und bringen Sie Ihr Leben in Ordnung. Dies ist die Botschaft, die wir teilen müssen.
