Reflection on Matthew 14v13-21
The feeding of the 5,000 is told against the backdrop of growing dissent. You were either for Jesus or not. The story is against the backdrop of the murder of John the Baptist by Herod Antipas. Jesus wants to get away to grieve his cousin’s death.
Many people were coming and going so that they didn’t have time to eat so Jesus calls them away to go to a deserted, lonely place by boat across the lake to eat, the north-east side of lake Galilee. But the people saw them going and ran on foot getting ahead of them. When Jesus got out of the boat he saw them and (instead of being annoyed as I would have been) he felt sorry for them and even though he was hungry he began to teach again. Compassion, empathy is always the pivot for Jesus’s actions and miracles. By this time it was late in the day, so the disciples told him to send them away so they could buy something to eat. But he said back to them “Give them some food yourselves" and they responded that it would cost eight months wages! So he asked them “How much bread do you have?” And they found five barley loaves, probably flat bread and two fish, probably cooked or pickled fish. Somebody’s picnic.
So he told them to tell the people to sit down in groups and they sat in groups of hundreds and fifties (how many picnics have you been at like that!). Having looked up to heaven, he blessed the bread, and gave thanks and gave it to them in successive distributions. He also divided the two fish and distributed it. They ate until they were full and couldn’t eat anymore. The left overs were collected in 12 wicker baskets as well as pieces of fish. The men present were more than 5,000 men plus women (who went counted!) and children.
The people find spiritual and real food. As Moses fed the people of Israel in the wilderness, so Jesus, in a deserted place, feeds the 5000. It’s a foretaste of the messianic banquet, an introduction to the communal life of the kingdom of God. But we have a long way to go before we achieve that vision!
Every 3 seconds someone dies of poverty in our world. We need a new way of being, where everyone has something to eat. To do so we will have to share and have less. That would be good for us too.
Hospitality is used as a way of demonstrating God’s presence. When we eat together God is with us. It breaks down barriers, sharing food. Many of the gospel stories are about eating together, that’s where a lot of the action is centred. The Passover, the Last Supper is a classic example. So let’s get together to hear God speaking to us, and lets share and eat together. And maybe we will see miracles happening. We need them!

反思馬太福音 14v13-21

Réflexion sur Matthieu 14v13-21
L'alimentation des 5 000 est racontée sur fond de contestation croissante. Vous étiez pour Jésus ou pas. L'histoire a pour toile de fond le meurtre de Jean-Baptiste par Hérode Antipas. Jésus veut partir pour pleurer la mort de son cousin.
Beaucoup de gens allaient et venaient de sorte qu'ils n'avaient pas le temps de manger, alors Jésus les appelle pour aller dans un endroit désert et solitaire en bateau sur le lac pour manger, le côté nord-est du lac de Galilée. Mais les gens les virent partir et coururent à pied en les devançant. Quand Jésus est sorti du bateau, il les a vus et (au lieu d'être ennuyé comme je l'aurais été) il s'est senti désolé pour eux et même s'il avait faim, il a recommencé à enseigner. La compassion, l'empathie est toujours le pivot des actions et des miracles de Jésus. À ce moment-là, il était tard dans la journée, alors les disciples lui ont dit de les renvoyer afin qu'ils puissent acheter quelque chose à manger. Mais il leur a répondu : « Donnez-leur vous-mêmes à manger » et ils ont répondu que cela coûterait huit mois de salaire ! Alors il leur a demandé : « Combien de pain avez-vous ? Et ils ont trouvé cinq pains d'orge, probablement du pain plat et deux poissons, probablement du poisson cuit ou mariné.
Alors il leur a dit de dire aux gens de s'asseoir en groupes et ils se sont assis en groupes de centaines et de cinquante (à combien de pique-niques avez-vous été comme ça !). Ayant levé les yeux vers le ciel, il bénit le pain, rendit grâces et le leur donna par distributions successives. Il a également divisé les deux poissons et les a distribués. Ils ont mangé jusqu'à ce qu'ils soient rassasiés et ne pouvaient plus manger. Les restes ont été collectés dans 12 paniers en osier ainsi que des morceaux de poisson. Les hommes présents étaient plus de 5 000 hommes plus des femmes (qui sont allées comptées !) et des enfants.
Les gens trouvent de la nourriture spirituelle et réelle. Comme Moïse a nourri le peuple d'Israël dans le désert, ainsi Jésus, dans un lieu désert, nourrit les 5000. C'est un avant-goût du banquet messianique, une introduction à la vie communautaire du royaume de Dieu. Mais nous avons encore un long chemin à parcourir avant d'atteindre cette vision !
Toutes les 3 secondes, quelqu'un meurt de pauvreté dans notre monde. Nous avons besoin d'une nouvelle façon d'être, où chacun a quelque chose à manger. Pour ce faire, nous devrons partager et avoir moins. Ce serait bien pour nous aussi.
L'hospitalité est utilisée comme un moyen de démontrer la présence de Dieu. Quand nous mangeons ensemble, Dieu est avec nous. Il brise les barrières, partage la nourriture. Beaucoup d'histoires de l'évangile parlent de manger ensemble, c'est là que se concentre une grande partie de l'action. La Pâque, la Cène est un exemple classique. Alors rassemblons-nous pour entendre Dieu nous parler, et partageons et mangeons ensemble. Et peut-être verrons-nous des miracles se produire.
