Reflection on Acts 1v6-14
The time between the resurrection and Pentecost is interrupted by Ascension, in the church calendar, the time when Jesus was taken into heaven. Before this we have had many resurrection appearances and rumours.
In Mathew the disciples are told to go to Galilee, where Jesus blesses and commissions them, as witnesses to the ends of the earth, to make disciples and to teach. The promise is given that Jesus will be with them always.
In Mark there is a similar commission and a resurrection appearance when the eleven disciples were eating. Miracles will accompany them. Then Jesus was taken from them.
The story is similar at the end of Luke and again the commission to preach to the ends of the earth and the promise of the Holy Spirit. He disappeared from them at Bethany and they returned to Jerusalem praising God.
In John there is no account of the ascension, only the commission to Peter and the promise to the beloved disciple John
At the beginning of Acts the disciples are waiting in Jerusalem for the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Jesus has rejected the earthly physical restoration of Israel and is building a new spiritual Israel. Again there is the commission to be witnesses. And then he was taken from them by a cloud. Two angels told them to return to Jerusalem a sabbath’s days journey. And there’s the promise of Jesus return.
After the Ascension the disciples and go back to the upper room, a familiar place, a place of security at a strange and unsettling time. Peter takes on the yoke of leadership and Matthias joins the apostles as they have now become.
The stories are linked by key points, the commissioning to be witnesses to the ends of the earth, the promise that Jesus is with them, the promise of the Holy Spirit when they return and wait in Jerusalem and the promise of a return. During the time of waiting the motley band are united and unified.
What does the story mean for us? There are many times in our lives when we lose what is most precious to us. At these times we go back to old haunts, to people we trust to find our bearings. We feel life has taken a wrong turn. There is a profound loss, an absence, a grieving and a return. In these times we reevaluate what is important and these times shake up our value system, shaking out hopefully what is not good for us or even destructive.
In our story however there is the loss of Jesus in bodily form. His resurrection appearances are both a comfort and a shock to the disciples, then his loss again and the charge to wait. I would be confused-wouldnt you?
Then there is the commission, to tell the story, to baptize to make disciples, when they are in a state of shock. They have the promise that he is with them however and that they are to be “clothed on high”. And so they do wait. They can do little else. They put their house in order and they wait. Its the same for us after times of loss, we need to draw strength from the familiar but also re-evaluate, and wait for that re-energising, that second wind.
Its difficult to look up and down together. We have glimpses of heaven, which lift us and remind us of our heavenly calling. This ensures we don’t get bogged down by what’s happening to us, that we cant see the wood for the trees. We need to take time to look up otherwise we will get bogged down with the mundane and petty, but also the mindless, dreadful meaningless events of life, the tragedies and there are many. We need to create spaces where we look up otherwise we cant reflect that higher calling on our lives. We are not good at this!
We need to let go off the things which drag us down to earth and to look to higher things, that lift us up and take us beyond our current limitations. We need also to put our house in order and then we need to wait to be clothed from on high, in the certainty that God's Spirit will help us and we need to pray.

Réflexion sur Actes 1v6-14

Au début des Actes, les disciples attendent à Jérusalem le baptême du Saint-Esprit. Jésus a rejeté la restauration physique terrestre d'Israël et construit un nouvel Israël spirituel. Encore une fois, il y a la commission d'être témoins. Et puis il leur fut enlevé par un nuage. Deux anges leur ont dit de retourner à Jérusalem un jour de sabbat. Et il y a la promesse du retour de Jésus.
Après l'Ascension, les disciples retournent au Cénacle, un lieu familier, un lieu de sécurité à une époque étrange et troublante. Pierre prend le joug du leadership et Matthias rejoint les apôtres tels qu'ils sont maintenant devenus.
Les histoires sont liées par des points clés, la commission d'être des témoins jusqu'aux extrémités de la terre, la promesse que Jésus est avec eux, la promesse du Saint-Esprit quand ils reviendront et attendront à Jérusalem et la promesse d'un retour. Pendant le temps d'attente, la bande hétéroclite est unie et unifiée.
Que signifie l'histoire pour nous ? Il y a de nombreuses fois dans nos vies où nous perdons ce qui nous est le plus précieux. À ces moments-là, nous revenons à d'anciens repaires, à des personnes en qui nous avons confiance pour trouver nos repères. On sent que la vie a pris une mauvaise tournure. Il y a une perte profonde, une absence, un deuil et un retour. En ces temps, nous réévaluons ce qui est important et ces temps secouent notre système de valeurs, secouant, espérons-le, ce qui n'est pas bon pour nous ou même destructeur.
Dans notre histoire cependant, il y a la perte de Jésus sous forme corporelle. Ses apparitions de résurrection sont à la fois un réconfort et un choc pour les disciples, puis sa perte à nouveau et la charge d'attendre. Je serais confus, pas vous ?
Ensuite, il y a la commission, de raconter l'histoire, de baptiser pour faire des disciples, quand ils sont en état de choc. Ils ont cependant la promesse qu'il est avec eux et qu'ils doivent être "vêtus d'en haut". Et donc ils attendent. Ils ne peuvent pas faire grand-chose d'autre. Ils mettent leur maison en ordre et ils attendent. C'est la même chose pour nous après des périodes de perte, nous devons puiser de la force dans le familier mais aussi réévaluer et attendre cette redynamisation, ce second souffle.
Il est difficile de regarder de haut en bas ensemble. Nous avons des aperçus du ciel, qui nous élèvent et nous rappellent notre appel céleste. Cela garantit que nous ne nous enlisons pas dans ce qui nous arrive, que nous ne pouvons pas voir le bois pour les arbres. Nous devons prendre le temps de lever les yeux, sinon nous nous enliserons dans le banal et le mesquin, mais aussi dans les événements insensés, épouvantables et sans signification de la vie, les tragédies et il y en a beaucoup. Nous devons créer des espaces où nous regardons vers le haut, sinon nous ne pouvons pas refléter cet appel supérieur dans nos vies. Nous ne sommes pas bons à ça !
Nous devons abandonner les choses qui nous entraînent sur terre et regarder vers des choses plus élevées, qui nous élèvent et nous emmènent au-delà de nos limites actuelles. Nous devons aussi mettre de l'ordre dans notre maison et ensuite nous devons attendre d'être vêtus d'en haut, dans la certitude que l'Esprit de Dieu nous aidera et nous devons prier.

Refleksi Kisah 1v6-14
Masa antara kebangkitan dan Pentakosta diganggu oleh Kenaikan, dalam kalendar gereja, masa ketika Yesus diangkat ke syurga. Sebelum ini kita telah mempunyai banyak penampilan dan khabar angin kebangkitan.

Dalam kisah kita bagaimanapun terdapat kehilangan Yesus dalam bentuk tubuh. Kemunculan kebangkitannya adalah satu penghiburan dan kejutan kepada murid-murid, kemudian kehilangannya lagi dan tuntutan untuk menunggu. Saya akan keliru-takkan awak?
Kemudian ada komisen, untuk menceritakan kisah, untuk membaptis untuk membuat murid, apabila mereka dalam keadaan terkejut. Mereka mempunyai janji bahawa Dia bersama mereka bagaimanapun dan bahawa mereka akan "dipakai di tempat yang tinggi". Dan jadi mereka menunggu. Mereka boleh melakukan sedikit lagi.
