Reflection on Matthew 17v1-9
The story of the transformation is a difficult one for us to identify with it. It is other worldly. In my experience it is rare to do more than catch a glimpse of God, a whisper, a brush of angel’s wings which transforms us. A man who came to see me asking for prayer struck me with his certainty of the existence of God despite not being a regular churchgoer. He told me he had watched his cousin die and she had talked to him of what she had seen and this car assembly man had been convinced of the existence of God, and life after death, ever since. I said to him “You are lucky, most people dont have such an experience.”
The Psalms are full of the search for God, “O Lord, why do you hide your face from me?” we find in Psalm 88, and always the encounter with God comes after much heart searching. Moses encountered God after 40 days of fasting and praying and his face shone. And so it was given to those closest to Jesus that they should encounter God, in this way.
Jesus has finally popped the question as to his identity and 8 days after this the four of them went up a mountain to pray, because it was difficult even then to pray in the middle of the city.
While Jesus was praying he was energized and became dazzling white, like a commercial for soap powder. In fact the symbolism should remind us more of the white robes of the martyrs in the book of Revelation.
There are those who tell me that they can see auras around people which tell you about them, their spiritual disposition and their state of health. Gordon Barker an Anglican priest with an amazing healing ministry, could see auras. I can’t see auras but some painters would depict people especially holy people with such auras (El Greco for example).
It is not impossible to believe that Christ received such an input of divine energy that he shone. The arrival of Moses and Elijah, sanctions Christ as the fulfilment of the Law and the Prophets but if you or I had been present we may have found it all terrifying.
We often find the connection with a half-waking half-sleeping state and visions. The disciples were tired. In true Jewish fashion Peter wants to build a memorial or booths to commemorate the event. But God shows that Christ alone is to be worshipped. Peter uses the title, “Rabbi” which hints of trouble here, and at the betrayal of Jesus at the moment of Jesus’ kiss. It may also hint of a regression back to Judaism. The whole experience is so terrifying the disciples don’t speak about it when they come down from the mountain. In fact they are pointed to the experience of the cross and suffering which is the traditional lot of prophets.
It may be that some of us are lucky enough to have such a mountain experience. What is certain is that it will pass and we will once more be faced with the demands of the valleys-real life.
This small group had gone away to pray. The practice of prayer does not guarantee such an experience although strange things may happen to us on the way to prayer. We may be transformed! This encourages us on our journey. Amen

Il nous est difficile de nous identifier à l'histoire de la transformation. C'est un autre monde. D'après mon expérience, il est rare de faire plus qu'entrevoir Dieu, un murmure, un effleurement d'ailes d'ange qui nous transforme. Un homme qui est venu me voir pour demander la prière m'a frappé par sa certitude de l'existence de Dieu bien qu'il ne soit pas un pratiquant régulier. Il m'a dit qu'il avait vu sa cousine mourir et qu'elle lui avait parlé de ce qu'elle avait vu et que cet assembleur de voitures était convaincu de l'existence de Dieu et de la vie après la mort depuis. Je lui ai dit "Tu as de la chance, la plupart des gens n'ont pas une telle expérience."
Les Psaumes sont pleins de la recherche de Dieu : « Ô Seigneur, pourquoi me caches-tu ta face ? nous trouvons dans le Psaume 88, et toujours la rencontre avec Dieu vient après une longue recherche du cœur. Moïse a rencontré Dieu après 40 jours de jeûne et de prière et son visage a brillé. Et c'est ainsi qu'il a été donné aux personnes les plus proches de Jésus de rencontrer Dieu, de cette manière.
Jésus a finalement posé la question de son identité et 8 jours après cela, les quatre sont montés sur une montagne pour prier, car il était déjà difficile de prier au milieu de la ville.
Pendant que Jésus priait, il a été énergisé et est devenu d'une blancheur éblouissante, comme une publicité pour du savon en poudre. En fait, le symbolisme devrait nous rappeler davantage les robes blanches des martyrs dans le livre de l'Apocalypse.

On retrouve souvent le lien avec un état mi-veille mi-sommeil et des visions. Les disciples étaient fatigués. Dans la plus pure tradition juive, Peter veut construire un mémorial ou des stands pour commémorer l'événement. Mais Dieu montre que Christ seul doit être adoré. Pierre utilise le titre "Rabbi" qui fait allusion à des problèmes ici et à la trahison de Jésus au moment du baiser de Jésus. Cela peut aussi suggérer une régression vers le judaïsme. Toute l'expérience est si terrifiante que les disciples n'en parlent pas lorsqu'ils descendent de la montagne. En fait, ils sont pointés vers l'expérience de la croix et de la souffrance qui est le lot traditionnel des prophètes.
Il se peut que certains d'entre nous aient la chance de vivre une telle expérience en montagne. Ce qui est certain, c'est que ça passera et nous serons une fois de plus confrontés aux exigences de la vraie vie des vallées.
Ce petit groupe était parti prier. La pratique de la prière ne garantit pas une telle expérience bien que des choses étranges puissent nous arriver sur le chemin de la prière. Nous serons peut-être transformés ! Cela nous encourage dans notre cheminement de Carême.

Historien om förvandlingen är svår för oss att identifiera oss med. Det är annat världsligt. Enligt min erfarenhet är det sällsynt att göra mer än att få en glimt av Gud, en viskning, en borste av änglavingar som förvandlar oss. En man som kom till mig och bad om bön slog mig med sin visshet om Guds existens trots att han inte var en vanlig kyrkobesökare. Han berättade att han hade sett sin kusin dö och att hon hade pratat med honom om vad hon hade sett och den här bilmontören hade varit övertygad om Guds existens, och livet efter döden, sedan dess. Jag sa till honom "Du har tur, de flesta människor har inte en sådan upplevelse."
Psalmerna är fulla av sökandet efter Gud: "Herre, varför döljer du ditt ansikte för mig?" finner vi i Psalm 88, och mötet med Gud kommer alltid efter mycket hjärtesökande. Mose mötte Gud efter 40 dagars fasta och bön och hans ansikte lyste. Och så gavs det till dem som stod Jesus närmast att de skulle möta Gud, på detta sätt.
Jesus har äntligen ställt frågan om sin identitet och 8 dagar efter detta gick de fyra upp på ett berg för att be, för det var svårt redan då att be mitt i staden.
Medan Jesus bad var han pigg och blev bländande vit, som en reklamfilm för tvålpulver. I själva verket borde symboliken påminna oss mer om martyrernas vita dräkter i Uppenbarelseboken.
Det finns de som säger till mig att de kan se auror runt människor som berättar om dem, deras andliga läggning och deras hälsotillstånd. Gordon Barker, en anglikansk präst med en fantastisk helandetjänst, kunde se auror. Jag kan inte se auror men vissa målare skulle avbilda människor, särskilt heliga människor med sådana auror (El Greco till exempel).
Det är inte omöjligt att tro att Kristus fick en sådan inmatning av gudomlig energi att han lyste. Moses och Elias ankomst sanktionerar Kristus som uppfyllelsen av lagen och profeterna, men om du eller jag hade varit närvarande kan vi ha tyckt att det hela var skrämmande.
Vi hittar ofta sambandet med ett halvvaket halvsovande tillstånd och visioner. Lärjungarna var trötta. På sant judiskt sätt vill Peter bygga ett minnesmärke eller bås för att fira händelsen. Men Gud visar att Kristus ensam ska dyrkas. Petrus använder titeln "Rabbi" som antyder problem här, och om Jesu förräderi i ögonblicket för Jesu kyss. Det kan vara så att några av oss har turen att få en sådan fjällupplevelse. Vad som är säkert är att det kommer att gå över och vi kommer återigen att ställas inför kraven från det verkliga livet i dalarna.
Den här lilla gruppen hade gått bort för att be. Utövandet av bön garanterar inte en sådan upplevelse även om konstiga saker kan hända oss på vägen till bön. Vi kan förvandlas! Detta uppmuntrar oss på vår fasteresa.
