Reading- Matthew 25v14-30
14 “For it is just like a man about to go on a journey, who called his own slaves and entrusted his possessions to them. 15 To one he gave five talents, to another, two, and to another, one, each according to his own ability; and he went on his journey. 16 The one who had received the five talents immediately went and did business with them, and earned five more talents. 17 In the same way the one who had received the two talents earned two more. 18 But he who received the one talent went away and dug a hole in the ground, and hid his master’s money.19 “Now after a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. 20 The one who had received the five talents came up and brought five more talents, saying, ‘Master, you entrusted five talents to me. See, I have earned five more talents.’ 21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter the joy of your master.’ 22 “Also the one who had received the two talents came up and said, ‘Master, you entrusted two talents to me. Reflection
In New Testament times a talent was a unit of exchange which varied in its value. It was fifteen years wages ! We are entrusted with God's resources. The man who had received one talent went off and dug a hole! Good stewardship of little things brings greater privilege and responsibility. Poor stewardship leads to losing even what we have- scary stuff! Like yeast, Gods gifts just go mouldy if not mixed with flour and multiplied. Like salt it is useless unless used as a flavouring for a meal. The harvest of the good seed, the gospel/the good news is our responsibility. You cannot keep it to yourself or it will go bad within you and be useless. It needs to be shared. It’s like the parable of the rich farmer who stores grain. But our story is also about economics. At the time the people of the land in Palestine were largely peasant subsistence farmers, and it was to these people, that Jesus ministered. They were constantly in debt. Jesus stories cut across a culture of debt and give freedom and forgiveness and the ability to start again, free from the burdens of financial debt. And our story today is about releasing people from the economic slavery of debt and enabling them to start again. We live in a society that sees us as economic units who either can benefit society financially or be a drain. But Jesus gives healing and dignity to such people and brings them centre stage and restores their place in society. There are so many people around us who need that kind of restoration. We have the ability both to give dignity and to restore people in our community. When we do this, we are being good stewards of all that God has given us. We are doing the will of Jesus.

We pray for peace in the US after the elections, democracy in Hong Kong, the victims of the earthquake in Turkey and Greece, and those who we carry on our hearts and minds today. May we not fail you. Amen

Reflexão
Na época do Novo Testamento, um talento era uma unidade de troca que variava em seu valor. Eram quinze anos de salário! Somos confiados com os recursos de Deus. O homem que recebeu um talento saiu e cavou um buraco! A boa mordomia das pequenas coisas traz maiores privilégios e responsabilidades. A má administração leva à perda até mesmo do que temos - coisas assustadoras! Como o fermento, os presentes de Deus ficam mofados se não forem misturados com farinha e se multiplicarem. Como o sal, é inútil a menos que seja usado como condimento para uma refeição. A colheita da boa semente, o evangelho / as boas novas é nossa responsabilidade. Você não pode mantê-lo para si mesmo ou ele estragará dentro de você e será inútil. Precisa ser compartilhado. É como a parábola do fazendeiro rico que armazena grãos. Mas nossa história também é sobre economia. Na época, as pessoas da terra na Palestina eram em grande parte agricultores de subsistência, e era a essas pessoas que Jesus ministrava. Eles estavam constantemente endividados. As histórias de Jesus atravessam uma cultura de dívidas e dão liberdade, perdão e a capacidade de começar de novo, livre do fardo das dívidas financeiras. E nossa história hoje é sobre libertar as pessoas da escravidão econômica da dívida e permitir que elas comecem de novo. Vivemos em uma sociedade que nos vê como unidades econômicas que podem beneficiar a sociedade financeiramente ou ser um dreno. Mas Jesus dá cura e dignidade a essas pessoas e as coloca no centro do palco e restaura seu lugar na sociedade. Existem tantas pessoas ao nosso redor que precisam desse tipo de restauração. Temos a capacidade de dar dignidade e restaurar pessoas em nossa comunidade. Quando fazemos isso, estamos sendo bons administradores de tudo o que Deus nos deu. Estamos fazendo a vontade de Jesus.

Oramos pela paz nos EUA após as eleições, pela democracia em Hong Kong, pelas vítimas do terremoto na Turquia e na Grécia e por aqueles que carregamos em nossos corações e mentes hoje. Que não possamos falhar com você. Amém
