Lent 2 Study group The cost of discipleship Mark 8v31-38

Lent 2 Study Group What does following Jesus mean?

Loving God help us to follow you
On the road to Jerusalem and beyond
To turn away from a safe and ordinary life
And to embrace boldly the way before us.

Draw a flower with four petals and write in each petal something you are doing at present you really enjoy, in another something you are finding difficult, something that taxes you physically, something that taxes you spiritually. Share with your neighbour.

Read Mark 8v31-38.

What words or phrases speak to you and why?

What is cross bearing discipleship? What about success?

How do we declare ourselves for Jesus? Have you recently experienced trouble because you’ve done this? How do your family respond to your faith?

Are we a suffering messianic community? Is it embarrassing?

Is sometimes the sign of the cross enough of a witness?

Bonhoeffer wrote, "is the grace we bestow on ourselves...grace without discipleship....Costly grace is costly because it costs a person their life, and it is grace because it gives us the only true life."

Let us pray for those who need our prayers.

Blessing

The eyes of the blind will be opened
The ears of the deaf will be unstopped
The lame shall leap like a deer
And the tongue of the dumb shall sing
